Winchester 1895 Second Model Cheekpiece Rifle 30 U.S. s/n 31191 mfg 1901 - 28" round barrel, straight grained, straight grip walnut stock with a cheek piece and hard rubber shotgun buttplate. Front sight is a beaded blade pinned in the integral base, with a Lyman Number 6 leaf rear and windage-adjustable Lyman 21 receiver sight. Equipped with sling swivel bases dovetailed into the barrel and screwed into the butt. Overall condition is excellent. Barrel retains 99% original strong blued finish; bore and mechanical functions are excellent; receiver retains 97%+ strong original blued finish; color casehardened hammer and trigger plate retain 98% original finish; Lyman receiver sight retains 99% original blue; American walnut stocks are in excellent original condition with nearly all their original factory varnish finish remaining with a few light handling marks. Cheek piece stocked Winchesters are among the rarest of collector Winchester rifles. This gun includes a Winchester factory letter from the Cody Firearms Museum and is featured in the book Winchester Model 1895 / Last of the Classic Lever Actions by Rob Kassab and Brad Dunbar on pages 156 and 269, with caption: Here’s another rifle where the warehouse records fail to mention the cheek piece stock or sling eyes. S/N 31191 letters as a Rifle; .30 caliber; shotgun butt; shipped in 1901. We carefully examined the stocks and believe them to be original factory work.
